OPINION: Students voice opinion about TPE

The TPE (Travaux personnels encadrés) is a part of the French Baccalaureate.  All Premiere students are required to write a report and give a presentation which combines two subjects. Starting in September, they have six months to prepare on these presentations and four months to work on the written report. These six months can go by very quickly. Forgetting about the project or getting distracted can be very easy because students still have to stay on top of regular class work.

Some students of La Tour accepted to be interviewed about the struggles associated with the TPE. I had the opportunity to speak to many types of students, some of which were well-prepared, while others were in a bit of a rush as the deadline quickly approached. The first group that I spoke to told me that they already knew what they would be working on before the introduction class, and they had already imagined how their final productions would look. Nonetheless, they still had to deliver serious and constant work over the six months leading up to the presentation.

The other group, however, had another story with more bumps and bruises along the way. At the beginning of the year, they did not know who to work with and their themes were often rejected by the teachers because they were too broad or not interesting enough. When their themes were finally accepted, they couldn’t be bothered to work and had some school work to that needed to be caught up.

The TPE is all about working constantly throughout the year to have the best possible presentation in order to get extra points for the bac. These points are considered “extra” because this is an “option” so only the points which are above 10 can count and they will be multiplied by two (because of the coefficient). But you can easily achieve these points by working diligently as the exam is not impossible to pass!
